Canned Strawberries – My Strawberry Jar Tutorial

I used the beautiful weather on Saturday and spent the day in garden. Had a cold glass of water, a piece of tasty strawberry cake, a creamy cappucino and – of course – some needle work.

The strawberries on the cake inspired me to make some strawberries that will not spoil.

Are you interested to sew some tasty fruit?

Here is my tutorial:

What do you need?

  • Leftover fabrics for the fruits
  • Wool felt for the leaves
  • Strong sewing yarn
  • A little sharp needle
  • Wadding

When you want to make the Sewing jar with the pin cushion and strawberry needles:

  • A jar with a whole in the cover
  • Cardboard
  • Another fabric, about 12x12cm
  • Long quilting pins

And here we go:

Cut out circles and halve them. Each halve circle will be one stawberry.

Take the felt and cut little blossoms. I used my Sizzix-Paper die, makes it easy and athe blossoms look the same.

I love the blossoms with the  long spiky leaves.

Turn the halve circles right to right and sew/close them on the straight edge.

This is the only time you need the sewing machine.

All the other work can be done „off-site“ in garden or on sofa.

Take the heavy yarn. It needs to be robust. Lineup the open circle with little stitches.

Fill the bag now with wadding before tightening it.

Take enough wadding so the starwberries are looking fresh and tight.

Now close the bag and sew it, don’t cut the thread.

Take the felt blossom and attach it to the just closed opening of the strawberry.

Pull the thread tight so the plant gets a natural shape.

Done!

Whe you want to fill the jar you will need around 15-20, in different size and colour.

Mine are between 2.5 t0 4 cm.

To change the jar cover into a pin cushion remove the inner metal and cut the cardbord so it matches the size of the cover.

Cut the fabris, at least twice in diameter of the cardbord. Use running stitches and close it a bit.

Place wadding and the cardbord.

Tighten it and sew it. Put the cusion into the metal cover. Maybe add another cardbord covered with fabric to let the inner side looks nice.

For the small strawberry quilt needles I cutted the halve circles a liitle bit smaller. Before stuffing it stick a big quitling pin from the inside through the peak. To the other things as for the other strawberries.

My strawberry pins are around 1cm.

Tasty?

The strawberry jar is a pretty decoration. But you can use it for knobs and other sewing utensils.

I will leave the strawberries there and put the jar in the shelf.

What I did on Sunday you will know later.

I wish you a nice week.
